Getting to know your pets

When it comes to your pet, do you truly know them? Have you done your homework? I realize that when you pick a pet it’s love at first sight. But what do you truly know about your pet?

If you have decided to go with a shelter pet, good for you. You will be providing a forever home for a pet that can be more loyal than most. But when you take this shelter pet home what do you know about them except the information you were given. Here are a few ways to get to know your pet well.

  • Many shelter pets are a combo of several different breeds. Maybe do a DNA test to find out exactly what breeds are in your pet.  Find the prominent ones and do some sleuthing to find what traits each breed has.

  • Did you bring other pets with you to get to know your new household addition or is it simply a surprise? It’s important to see if other pets in the household can tolerate your new addition as well.

  • How friendly or exuberant is your new shelter pet? Did you ask many questions about your new pet such as, how well do they get along with other pets? Do they have issues with cats? Especially, if you have one. How are they with new people or kids?  What is their temperament?

  • Do they have any health issues or handicaps you need to be aware of?

  • Do they have any behavior issues of note, and have they ever been returned due to the behavior.

  • Do you why they were dropped at the shelter, or were they rescued after being abandoned?

Some may decide to get a pet from a breeder thinking they will get a much better pick. However, you still need to do your homework.

  • Check out the facility: are there many, many cages or is it an open space? This tells you whether this is a good breeder or a puppy mill that flouts rules protecting animals.

  • Ask to see the parents as this will tell you what temperament your pet may have.

  • When were they separated from their mother?

  • What type of social skills have they been taught?

  • What type of health tests have been conducted?

  • What type of guarantee do they offer?

Now granted, not every pet is created equal but it’s best to know as much up front as possible making your choice a much easier one to make. When you get to know your pets’ background you can have a better idea know what to expect, which helps you create a home that will be beneficial for you both.

Here’s to getting to know your pet to make the best decision for you and your pet.
