From Runaway to Loving Big Brother

A cat mom in her own words...

he was afraid that he had done something to make me mad...

I want to thank Carolyn for helping me with my new kitties on two different occasions.

The first occasion, I was out of town for a week and it was the first time I had been away from my cat T'Challa who was about 16 months old. He came to me at 5 months and it was the first time I had been away from him. He is an outdoor cat and often spends time outside, but always comes in at night. My adult children were at home with him and our other critters. On my fourth day away I got a call from my daughter who said that T'Challa hadn't come back and had been gone for two days. They had looked for him, put food out, but no sign of him. My first thought was to contact Carolyn. She was able to connect with T'Challa - he was scared, worried, afraid that he had done something to make me mad at him. He was looking for me everywhere and couldn't find me. She explained that I had to leave to see a family member and would be back, that he had done nothing wrong, that I still loved him dearly.

Carolyn encouraged him to go home, that everyone there loved him and would take care of him until I returned in another three nights. He returned home the next day! He had lost a lot of weight - obviously hadn't been eating. He ate a lot and settled back in. When I finally returned, we shared a loving reunion.

Partially because of the above experience, I thought it would be helpful for him to have a friend so if I needed to go somewhere, he would still have someone with him. I recently got a kitten, Houdini, 2 months old. I was doing the slow introduction of the two of them, but T'Challa was not acting aggressively toward Houdini, clearly upset that there was another cat in my room and that he couldn't come and go in my room as he was accustomed to.

Once again, I had Carolyn connect with T'Challa. He explained that he felt like he'd been replaced and was not happy.

Carolyn explained to him that I wanted to have someone to keep him company and that he would need to be the big brother and show Houdini the ropes - teach him and help him acclimate to the house and all the family members, both 2- and 4- legged. He argued a bit, but Carolyn explained that I had done the same process when he was a kitten and first came to the house. Once he begrudgingly acknowledged that, he agreed to help. The next day, instead of hissing and striking at Houdini, I saw T'Challa watching Houdini, trying to make sense of who he was. Within a week, the two were fast friends and have continued to have a great relationship. I can still see T'Challa teaching Houdini what's ok and not ok, setting boundaries and examples.

I am so grateful for Carolyn and her unique ability to talk with my pets. I have used her with all my critters, including my dogs and horses. It's uncanny how she can pick up on their personalities and convey what they are feeling and what I am feeling. She has an amazing gift and I highly recommend her! Thank you, Carolyn!
