When is it time to let go and allow your pet to transition from this world?

This can be one of the hardest decisions you ever make. Your pet is a part of your family and when you decide that it’s time to let them transition it can be fraught with much guilt.

  • Did I make the right choice?

  • Did I do everything I could?

  • Was it truly time or was I simply being selfish?

  • What if I pulled the plug too soon, or even too late?

We certainly can’t predict when the right time is, but there are many precursors that you want to pay attention to. Also, know that your pet knows when its time. They can tell you in many ways, but you must be open to watching their body language. This can be:

  • The look in their eyes. Are they saying, “I’m done and ready to move on.”?

  • Are they spending more time being close to you to soak up as much time with you as possible?

  • Are they hiding or isolating themselves more often?

  • Are they having too hard a time walking, seeing, or hearing?

  • Is the quality of their life really what you want for them?

What we don’t realize is that our pets are not afraid of death. They don’t look at death in the same way as we do. This is often hard for us to understand. They know when it’s time way before we do. I realize that letting go is one of the hardest things to do. You don’t want to say goodbye. You aren’t ready for them to go. You want them to live forever, but you know that’s not possible. But know this:

  • You did nothing wrong; you’re love for them allowed you to let them go.

  • Honor them by allowing them to move on and be free from their aging or compromised body.

  • Be there with them as they take their last breath. They simply don’t want to take this journey alone. They will need you even more than ever during this transition.

I realize that this is not an easy road for you to travel, but the love you have for them goes way beyond the guilt you may be feeling. They know you love them and will never judge you. They know this was a hard decision to make and love you even more for letting them go.

Please get in touch with me if you need help with this transition or want to say goodbye. I’ve helped many clients go through this transition with grace and love.

Much love to you on this journey.
