How to truly find the right pet for you.

When you first decide to bring a pet into your home or a horse to stable, what is the process? Do you take a moment to plan? Do you write down what type of pet you are looking for? Are you looking for a certain type of personality? Or are you simply winging it?

Granted there are many shelters full of animals waiting to find that forever home. But when you are looking to find that perfect pet how can you tell? Believe it or not, many times we end up picking each other. Yes, that’s right. They chose you as much as you chose them. But people don’t pay attention to the subtle signs that this is the perfect pet for them. Let me explain with this true story of finding the perfect match.

“I found myself wandering the shelters, going from one cage to the next. Looking inside to see what might be staring back at me. I went with the intent of finding the perfect cat for me and my situation. However, I also went with an open mind. I passed one cage where each time I went by a small paw came through the cage and a loud ‘meow’. Even though I walked through the shelter each time I passed this cage the same paw came out from under the cage. I stopped to find the most beautiful tuxedo cat sitting before me looking me in the eyes. I knew as soon as I laid eyes on this beautiful loving cat, he was the perfect match. Not only did I walk out with this cat, but I fell in love with his sister as well. Now each time I came hom I gt pure joy and was greeted with a cuddle and meow from both brother and sister.”

The first time visiting a shelter can be very daunting because there are so many animals looking for that right owner. The key is, are you paying attention to their body language when you pass by? So, how do you find the perfect pet for you? Here are a few key things to keep in mind.

  • Write down a list of the personality traits you may be looking for. Gentle nature, spontaneous, energetic, loving. What’s important to you?

  • Will you be able to care for this pet? Not short term, but long term. When you get a pet, you need to know that you are making a commitment to this pet to truly be their forever home. Just as with people, their needs will change as they age.

  • Is this pet the best match for you considering your stature? If the pet is large, are you able to walk them regularly or handle their weight if they begin to start pulling on the leash?

  • Is your living situation the best match for your pet? If you are in a small apartment or space, you may want to consider a pet that fits the environment. Remember larger pets need more room to move around.

  • Are you able to consistently and properly exercise your dog every day? Would a cat or smaller animal serve your needs better?

  • Spend time with this pet before you decide to ensure they are the best fit for you.

  • Watch how they react in the cage with the other animals. Are they friendly or more fearful? Observe the same with the people who are their current caretakers. They may be nervous, and need more nurturing from you to flourish if so.

When you take the time to invest in this pet with your heart, is when you have truly found your perfect match. Remember, it will take time for your pet(s) to adjust to their new living situation. You need to be patient with them as they get used to you and their environment. You must put yourself in their paws, how would you feel coming from a shelter going into a home that is new and different? You will be excited, scared, and not sure if these people will truly love you or be trustworthy. Be there for them and watch how they will be there for you when you need them the most.
