Happiness comes from the root word happy, which is “feeling or showing pleasure or contentment.”
In fact, this universally important idea found its way into the U.S. Declaration of Independence with the words. “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.” But what is that pursuit? The Zen Master and poet Thich Nhat Hanh offers this idea:
“There is no way to happiness – happiness is the way.” By Thich Nhat Hanh
Many have been working to find happiness ever since. But what makes one person happy may not be the same for another, so how do you define happiness? I truly believe that Thich Nhat Hanh had the right idea. It’s not the pursuit of happiness, it’s the journey. However, there are many working hard to find that life happiness, by…
looking under rocks,
through uneventful jobs,
broken relationships,
and with money.
We all have our definition of what happiness is, as it’s based on each individual and what they consider being happy. Only 14% of American adults consider themselves as being very happy. That doesn’t make for very good odds. Most look at happiness as something that’s way into the future, but become disappointed as their happiness scale changes over the years. What might have made someone happy one year may not be the same the following year.
As our world gets more and more materialistic, many feel the amount of money or things they have equates to happiness. However, science finds the more we acquire the less happy we become. How can that be when that was what our happiness meter was based on?
The way to happiness is not a thing, place, or sum of money. It’s how you feel inside. How you see yourself is what truly makes you happy. So, the “Pursuit of Happiness” is an internal journey, not how much money and things you can amass.
Now that you know this, how happy are you?
Did you feel that getting things and money was what would make you happy and still you find that happiness is alluding you?
